Joyriders set car alight at new gate installed at park entrance

ANOTHER car was burnt out in a Ballyfermot estate plagued Drumfinn/Rossmore area over the weekend – the latest such incident to plague the Ballyfermot estate this year.

Joyriders were prevented from entering California Hills park on Saturday night due to a new gate installed by Dublin City Council, however the car was set alight at the entrance.

The car burnt out at the entrance to California Hills park.

In February, a stolen car was rammed into the front gates of a primary school St Louise’s National School on Drumfinn Road before it was burnt out. The front gates of the school were locked at the time of the incident, which occurred during a mid-term break.

“This is the third car at this location this year,” said a local resident.

“We had another two burnt out around eight to nine weeks ago outside the old folks flats on the Drumfinn Road roundabout, and a couple of cars burnt out on either end of Rossmore Road.

“It just seems to be getting worse as the year has progressed. Only for the new reinforced gate at entrance to the park, they would have been in the park for days. We’d like to thank the local Dublin City Council for reinforcing the park, but we’d like to see gardai make the same effort as DCC.”

According to DCC, funding has been secured from the discretionary fund to upgrade two wheelchair accessible gates in the near future to prevent access to California Hills by scramblers and horses.

DCC say the work will be carried out in consultation with the residents, and probation services have been carrying out regular clean ups of the area.
