Potential for 2,000 residential units in Cherry Orchard and Park West

THERE is potential for the development of approximately 2,000 new residential units in Cherry Orchard and Park West, according to Dublin City Council’s recently released Draft Local Area Plan (LAP) for Park West-Cherry Orchard.

Public submissions are now being accepted on the plans, while a number of information sessions have been scheduled in the local area to discuss the plans.

One of the key points is a ‘focal point’ in Cherry Orchard

LAPs set out the principles for future development in the area concerned, and also develop a vision for the future of the area.

In relation to the Draft LAP for Park West-Cherry Orchard, it’s been stated within the council’s plans that there is “a need for regeneration” within Cherry Orchard, and that there are approximately 46 hectares of land in the area that’s available for development, with the potential to deliver 2,000 new residential units in the area.

The vision of the draft plan is “to make Park West-Cherry Orchard an attractive and identifiable place with a vibrant and active community” through various means.

These means include the development of “a good mix” of the types of residential developments in the area, new commercial and enterprise spaces to provide opportunities for local employment, and the hope that both residents and workers “will benefit from a high-quality, integrated public transport system”.

The key points in the plan look at the development of vacant sites, the promotion of sustainable transport, the creation of a local neighbourhood “focal point” in Cherry Orchard, and facilitating the provision of local retail units.

The plans also include the consolidation and improvement of the existing sports and recreation facilities in the area and the promotion of the provision of new recreational facilities, while the enhancement of existing open space is also included in the plans.

The council’s LAP team will be holding a number of information sessions on Tuesday, June 18.

The first one will take place in The Orchard Centre from 9.30am to midday, the second will be from 1.00pm to 2.30pm at Unit 11, The Plaza, Park West, and the third one will be held in the Ballyfermot Civic Centre from 4pm to 6pm.

Submissions will be accepted up to and including Monday, July 22.
