Sod-turning event to take place for new €1.6m Play, Skate and BMX park

By Maurice Garvey

A SOD-turning of the new € 1.6m skate park and playground in Ballyfermot is set to take place on Tuesday, August 20.

Construction work started on the Play, Skate and BMX park, at the start of July.

Within days of the work starting, a security guard was assaulted by a gang of up to 15 people at the construction site, with Dublin City Council citing “serious threats” made to contract workers on site.

At the time, DCC told The Echo there are liaising with the contractor and gardai “to ensure that this important amenity for the youth of Ballyfermot and a wider area is able to progress without threat of violence to people who are employed on the site.”

The project was delayed last year due to the withdrawal of the previously appointed contractor.

DCC recently appointed a new contractor from England for the project, located on the corner of Le Fanu Park, adjacent to Ballyfermot Leisure Centre.

Back in 2015, the Matheson Foundation funded a design competition for the skate park, along with public consultation and engagements, in conjunction with the Irish Architectural Foundation.

The Foundation and the IAF were looking for a philanthropic project to create and DCC suggested Ballyfermot as an ideal location.

Funding for the construction of the skatepark is from Dublin City Councils capital programme.
