Clondalkin community space issue yet to be resolved

THE title issue regarding a vacant community space unit in Clondalkin, which was signed off for elderly use in 2002, has yet to be resolved.

South Dublin County Council’s law agent has been corresponding with the solicitor representing the unit at Orchard Lane in Clondalkin Village, but are still awaiting a response.

The premises forms part of a mixed-use development.

Provision of a community space was included as a condition of the original disposal of the site in 2002, but the title has not been transferred to SDCC.

Independent Councillor Francis Timmons understands the issue is still with the law department but urges SDCC to meet and work with Clondalkin Men’s Shed.

“Clondalkin Men’s Shed current premises is small and limits activities they can undertake,” said Cllr Timmons.

“This unit was original planned as a community space and planning permission was given with this condition. It must be delivered to our community. This unit has the potential to provide a much-needed senior citizen hub right in the heart of Clondalkin Village.’’

At the Clondalkin area meeting on Wednesday, Cllr Timmons asked SDCC for an update report on the unit, and for a comment on reports that it will cost €185,000 to finish the internal fitout at the unit.

A spokesperson for SDCC said: “Once the title issue is settled a costing will be carried out by Economic Development Department to establish the nature of the works required to bring the unit to a useable standard. “
