New €12m building to replace existing Stewarts Hospital Special School

STEWARTS HOSPITAL Special School is to get a new €12 million school building, replacing the existing school. The new building will increase the school’s capacity from 125 pupils up to 170.

Capital funding for the development was announced on Tuesday by the Department of Education and Skills.

The school’s principal, Mary Carrig, described the news as “a pleasant surprise”.

She told The Echo: “It was great news to get. The project will increase our capacity from 125 pupils up to 170. It is estimated to cost in the region of €12 million”.

The catchment area for the special school is Clondalkin, Lucan, Tallaght, Ballyfermot and Palmerstown.

The works will see a new 7,000 sq metre Special School providing 28 classrooms to replace the existing school.

The school is being contacted directly by the Department’s School Building Unit with details on the project and the funding amount awarded.

Tánaiste and TD for Dublin Mid-West Frances Fitzgerald also welcomed the announcement that capital funding has been granted for Stewarts Hospital Special School.

Minister Fitzgerald said she was delighted that the Department of Education and Skills has been able to allocate funding to allow Stewarts Hospital Special School to continue with their building project.

She added:” I wish them every success with the build. This Government is determined to ensure that our recovering economy can benefit everyone in society. Our children should be number one on this priority list and it is really important that they can learn in a safe and modern environment.

"I am delighted that our local school is to receive this vital funding.”
