Taking a step back in time at movie morning

By Mary Dennehy

Grandads and their grandchildren took a step back in time last week, when an old-style movie morning was staged in Newcastle – complete with ushers and Knickerbocker glories.

The movie morning kick started the Bealtaine Festival celebrations in the Newcastle area, and was organised by local group RAMS [Retired Active Mens Social].

The 6th class students of St Finian’s National School were invited to the morning, with 50 pupils and their teachers arriving for some old-school movie magic.

Paddy Becton, the Chairman of RAMS, gave guests an introduction to times past – and shared RAMS members’ memories of going to the pictures.

According to Matt Dowling, Secretary of RAMS, guests were treated to popcorn, tubs of ice-cream, fruit drinks, scones and tea.

Knickerbocker glories were also on the menu, and were made with fruit cocktail, two scoops of ice cream, vanilla and strawberry, whipped cream, chocolate shavings and topped with syrup.

Ice-creams were also served by two ushers, who donned dicky bows, aprons and straw hats – and who delivered ice-cream from usher trays.

After a screening of classic Western Shane (1953), RAMS in Rhythm entertained guests with a number of songs – including Hey Good Lookin, You are my Sunshine and Que Sera Sera.

RAMS wished to thank South Dublin County Council for their financial support in delivering these events.
