Amazon granted permission to build fourth data centre in Tallaght

By Aideen O'Flaherty

AMAZON has been granted planning permission for the construction of a new two-storey data centre, which will be an annex to the online giant’s neighbouring data centre in the Greenhills Business Park on the Greenhills Road in Tallaght.

The data centre will add to Amazon’s already significant tally of three data centres in the Tallaght area, with the first site for one of their data centres in the area, located at the site of Tesco’s vacated distribution warehouse off the Greenhills Road, being purchased by them back in 2011.

Following this, Amazon then snapped up the Shinko Microelectronics site in 2014, they then acquired the former Jacobs Biscuits factory in 2015, and last year they purchased the former Barretts warehouse site with plans for each of the sites to eventually house data centres.

The current application was lodged by ADSIL (Amazon Data Services Ireland Limited) late last year with plans for the proposed building to be accessed through the neighbouring data centre to the north via the existing site entrance that serves the neighbouring data centre.

Provisions for electrical rooms for electronic operations, mechanical plant rooms and support areas including offices and welfare facilities, a loading bay and back-up generators to be located in a fenced compound were included in the application.

There are plans for the existing boundary structures including railings, fencing and gates to be replaced with a new high perimeter railing, and a ventilation plant at roof level to be screened from view on all sides.

South Dublin County Council granted permission for the development last month, with a number of conditions.

These conditions include the use of plant equipment with low inherent potential for noise generation, and that all utility cables shall be located underground throughout the entire site.
