ONE Tallaght family has showcased their pride in Ireland and commemorated the 1916 centenary by decorating their home to remember the events 100 years ago.

The Dunbar family home in Glenshane has attracted a lot of attention over the past few weeks, with cars stopping outside their home to take pictures which have also garnered a lot of reaction online.

Mary Dunbar, whose daughter Cathy came up with the idea, spoke to The Echo about the work that has gone into decorating their home and the reaction it has received.

Mary said: “It's something that we wanted to do, to mark the freedom of our country. There's a few family names that were involved in the rising, but we don't know if we're directly related to them.

“It was my daughter's idea. She's very into politics, so she'd delighted with how it looks and the reaction it's gotten. My sons and my husband made everything that's on the house.”

Since decorating the house, there have been a number of cars parking outside the home, with local deliverymen regularly getting out of their vans to take pictures of the decoration.

Mary said: “We've had a great reaction since it all went up onto the house. Cars are stopping outside and taking pictures. We didn't expect that reaction at all, so it's brilliant.

“It's definitely something that we would do again if we had the chance. My sons plan to add more to the house, and then black flags will be put up to mark the executions, with everything coming down after the date of the last execution.”

Included within the decoration on the family's home is a copy of the proclamation, an Easter lily in remembrance of those who died or were executed as part of the 1916 Easter Rising, with Irish flags also adorning the house.
