Work to start on Harriers €500,000 tartan track

By Brendan Grehan

THE WIND and rain did not deter the members of Lucan Harriers on Monday night who came out in force to run a last lap of the cinder track, with work starting on their new tartan track in a few weeks.

In 2015, the club received €200,000 in sports capital funding and they have been fundraising assiduously ever since.

So far they have raised €41,000. The cost of the track will be in excess of €500k.

There will also be the cost of a new fence so the final cost will be nearer to €600k, The Echo has learned.

Over 80 athletes turned out to run a last lap of Lucan Harriers historic cinder track.

Vinny Murtagh, Jean Murtagh and Ann Magee who all ran the first lap of the cinder track when it opened in 1984 were there to take part in the last lap along with members of the Senior, fit4life and the juvenile sections of the club. The club had a special guest in Frank Greally of the Irish Runner magazine who joined in the run.

Lucan Harriers PRO Fanchea Gibson told The Echo that the new track should be open within four months. Fundraising is ongoing for the project.  As part of their fundraising drive they are auctioning framed images of two icons of Athletics- Usain Bolt and Mo Farah. The unique thing is that each framed image is signed by the athlete. They are real collectors items.

Online Bids Close on January 21st and you can make a bid at: fundraising4lucanharriers [at] gmail [dot] com.
