A unauthorised charity collector who was collecting in a Lidl car park in Clondalkin has been further remanded for a Probation Report by Blanchardstown District Court.

Shane Cawley, aged 23, with an address at Palmerstown Lodge, Kennelsfort Road Lower, Palmerstown, had pleaded guilty to acting as a collector and holding an un- authorised collection at the Lidl car park, Nangor Road, Clondalkin, on August 26, 2018.

Cawley was before Judge Paula Murphy for a probation report.

The case had originally been heard by Judge David McHugh.

The court had heard that gardai encountered Cawley at 12.40pm in the car park on the above date.

He was holding a collection at a wooden table, with a plastic lunch box containing money.

The Gardai asked him what he was collecting for and he told them it was the Irish Lung Foundation, the court had heard.

When asked if he had a licence, Cawley produced an Irish Lung Foundation ID card, but a garda said it was clear the card was not valid as it had been “altered and doctored”, the court had heard.

Cawley had no previous convictions. The court had heard that Cawley had been unemployed and homeless and had been staying in B and B’s.

Cawley’s counsel told Judge Murphy that it was a good probation report.

Judge Murphy noted that the case had been heard by Judge McHugh.

She remanded Cawley on continuing bail to May 2 for a further report and marked it for Judge McHugh’s attention.
