Walk and talk about mental health issues

By Mary Dennehy

MEMBERS of the community are invited to take part in the fourth annual Walk into the Light, which is taking place in Bohernabreena this Sunday, October 7.

Organised by the Tree of Hope team and Shane Smith Fitness, with support from St Anne’s GAA Club, the free event aims to get people walking and talking about mental health.

More than 400 people took part in last year’s walk, which alongside encouraging people to talk about mental health also provides a supportive space for those who have lost a loved one.

The walk has also been planned to coincide with World Mental Health Week, which runs from October 7 to 13.

According to Noeleen Fulham, Tree of Hope: “People are encouraged to come along and walk and talk about mental health.

“It is also a way of remembering all of those living with mental health issues and those who have lost a loved one.”

The 5k walk will leave St Anne’s clubhouse at 6.30am this Sunday, October 7, and make its way to the Bohernabreena Reservoir, where those present will pause and reflect for 15 minutes before making their way back to the GAA club.

“The walk is open to the whole community,” Noeleen said.

“There is no sign-up for the free walk, people can just come along on the day.

“People can make a donation if they wish, with money donated going to Tree of Hope.”

To date, 212 Trees of Hope have been planted across communities, with two more due to take root in the coming week.

County Mayor Mark Ward and Tallaght Person of the Year, Sinead Tighe, will officially open the walk, after which there will be refreshments in St Anne’s GAA.

Hi-viz jackets will also be provided for all walkers.
