Waterstown Park proudly waves the Green Flag

By Maurice Garvey

ALTHOUGH only opened 10 years ago, Waterstown Park has made great strides in the decade, boosted by a strong showing from local community groups.

Recently, the Palmerstown amenity celebrated the awarding of the An Taisce Green Flag for Parks 2019 – one of four flags awarded to parks in the South Dublin County Council area this year.

“When Waterstown Park was officially opened on May 28, 2009, it was said to be the most valuable park in the county in terms of its ecological diversity with over 300 species of plants, animals and birds,” said Gráinne Ní Mhuirí, Palmerstown Meitheal Tidy Towns.

“It was with great pride that the Green Flag was raised in the presence of many community groups who helped raise the profile of the park in the last number of years, including Waterstown park run, Waterstown Warriors runners and walkers, parents who fought for the new playground, campaigners for the restoration of the Silver Bridge, the Pink Ladies+1 from the Village, and the Meitheal Tidy Towns along with local nature enthusiasts and residents.”

Ms Ní Mhuirí praised Eddie and the local SDCC crew for “pulling out all the stops when compiling the application.”

Future plans for the park include plotting out a native tree trail and further managing the park for biodiversity to encourage pollinators – with a view to applying for the Pollinator Project Award next year.
