Bread & Jam book launch

A BOOK launch was held at the Walkinstown Social Service Centre, for their self-published collection of short stories, written by Lee Eustace.

The collection, named Bread & Jam, is comprised of 12 short, non-fiction stories, separated into three sections—Friendship, Love and Charity.

The stories are developed from conversations Lee had with 12 different members from the Centre, focused around their life and why they go to the Centre, which Lee then made into a readable version of their conversation.

“The book came together not by a set list of questions but through conversation,” said Lee, during his speech.

The collection is a landmark to the Walkinstown Social Service Centre and the wider communities of Dublin 12.

Cathy Scuffle, guest speaker and local historian, said: “This right here is the history. If in years to come you want to know what Granny or Grandad were doing, this book is where you go.”

Michele Deegan, the Centre’s Manager, said: “This book came about from an idea we had almost 11 years ago.”

“It was a long time in coming but if it hadn’t been we wouldn’t be here with this collection this evening.”

Over 100 people, including friends of the Centre, staff, members, volunteers and guests gathered to celebrate the occasion.

“At least 25 people were standing because we only had a little under 100 chairs available,” said Lee.

Lee, who is an emerging writer from the Walkinstown area, spent his summer working on collecting and moulding the stories into a bestselling collection in the community.

They sold 120 copies at the launch, and the book will also be on sale Saturday, December 2 at the Centre’s annual craft fair, and there will also be a copy kept in the Walkinstown Library.
