Debenhams Tallaght store to close as retailer pulls out of Ireland

By Maurice Garvey

A TERRIBLE day for staff at Debenhams, after the announcement that the department store is pulling out of Ireland.

The company temporarily closed all 11 of its stores last month as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions.

This includes The Square in Tallaght – which has a massive Debenhams store on the ground floor containing multiple different departments.

Many of the staff have been with the company for years, dating back to the time of Roche’s.

It is understood that the company has been telling its Irish staff today that it will not be reopening the stores when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

A liquidator is to be appointed to the Irish operations in the coming days.

Its UK arm is entering administration for the second time in a year to protect the business from legal action from creditors during the coronavirus emergency.

Earlier this week the retailer said it had filed a notice of intent (NOI) to appoint an administrator.

However, at that time a spokesperson said its Irish stores would be unaffected by the decision.

In 2016, a motion to repudiate the lease Debenhams Tallaght and two other branches, was submitted to the High Court, after it said that high rents at its Irish outlets were making its business here unsustainable.
