FLYNN musical coming soon to Peacock Theatre

By Alannah Kenny

BALLYFERMOT man Joe O’Connor has developed a new musical play entitled FLYNN which will be shown in The Abbey’s Peacock Theatre on November 24 and 25.

The play will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the death of one of Ireland’s greatest poets, Patrick Kavanagh.

Mr O’Connor who is currently living in Montreal, Canada, explained that as this is a musical, “production costs are many” and as a result, he is campaigning to help get funding for the play to balance what the Abbey Theatre have input already.

FLYNN pays homage to Kavanagh’s novel Tarry Flynn as it draws similarities with certain characters in FLYNN and several of Kavanagh’s poems were arranged into songs by Mr O’Connor to feature in this tribute musical.

He assures however that “one need not be aware of [Kavanagh’s] works to enjoy the story, the fine dialogue, the music and dance.”

The range of music on offer is from standard folk to folk-rock and all are original songs derived from the poetry of Kavanagh.

Mr O’Connor hopes that the public and local businesses might get behind his project and support the production by donating money however small to the production’s Gofundme page.

He also explains that the fund is in Canadian dollars so he needs to raise €15,000 which will cover the exchange rate and the percentage that the Gofundme site takes. Therefore, he hopes to reach €14,000 to cover the costs of this production.
