85 apartments evacuated during Tallaght fire

Dublin Fire Brigade, along with Gardai, attended an underground fire at an apartment complex on Main Street, Tallaght, last night (Monday).

Gardai confirmed to The Echo that a fire broke out in the Bancroft Complex apartments at 11pm.

All residents from the 85 apartments were evacuated.

In a statement to Echo.ie this morning, a Gardai spokesperson said that a van and a car were destroyed and there was damage to nearby cars.

Last night eight units of Dublin Fire Brigade dealt with the blaze with support from Gas Networks Ireland.

As a result of the fire, road closures were put in place in the area.

Gas and electricity had been isolated on the fireground on Main Street, with Dublin Fire Brigade evacuating residents and reporting that the fire was under control.

Fans were then used to ventilate and clear the apartment complex of smoke and gases.

Although the majority of residents could later access their apartments at approximately 2.30am, a small number were rehoused, according to Dublin Fire Brigade.

The scene is being preserved pending a technical examination and ESB are this morning at the apartment complex.
