DUBLIN Lions roared to victory in their first ever underage cup as they lifted the Under-14 Dublin Ladies Basketball Cup last weekend, reports Hayden Moore.

The Clondalkin side held off bitter rivals Liffey Gales in a game which saw them leave Oblate Hall 31-24 victors, with Rachel O’Carroll and Bia DeCastro the standouts.

After the first quarter the sides were drawn level at six a-piece, and the Lions started to settle throughout the second-quarter – but still couldn’t edge ahead of the opposing Liffey Gales.

Coaches Chris McNairney and Nabil Murad gave their side half-time talk needed, as Dublin Lions came flying out of the traps in the third-quarter to take the lead.

Rachel O’Carroll was named MVP on the day as she managed scoring duties with ease and helped push her side over the line with a seven-point victory.

Dublin Lions have been chasing Liffey Gaels throughout the league campaign, having lost to them earlier in the year, and losing most recently by 20 points.

Redemption story

Speaking to Lions manager Carol O’Carroll, she spoke to the Echo about how it was a redemption story.

“It was such a great game, especially because they beat us by 20 points only recently, so their confidence was running high coming into this game – leaving our coaches Nabil and Chris to work with the girls during training.

“They really worked so hard to get this. The fight and the spirit in the team was so spot on, and the supporters did a great job to spur them on throughout the game.”
