Frost selected for World Team Championships

KATE Frost’s great start to the year got even better after she was selected for the Ireland Senior Badminton squad that will contest the World Mixed Team Championships which take place in China next month.

The Templeogue competitor’s selection comes just two months after she landed her first National Senior Women’s Singles title- an achievement, she believes, went a long way to securing her a place on the Ireland panel.

“I think that [victory in the Nationals] was the turning point for me because I beat two players who were on the team the previous year, Sara Boyle in the semi finals and Rachel Darragh in the final” said Frost.

“It’s the biggest achievement to date for me after winning the Senior Nationals and I’m really looking forward to it. It will also be my first time competing in Asia so it’ll be a whole new experience for me” she told The Echo.

Ireland have been selected in a group that includes Australia, New Zealand and Nepal and Frost is likely to be competing in singles and doubles matches.

She is no stranger to international badminton having earned her first cap for Ireland last year when she travelled to the European Championships in Kazan, Russia where they competed in Group Three, losing out to Germany and Ukraine, but beating Lithuania.

Yet before she travels overseas again, Frost will be turning her attention to this week’s InterVarsities in which she will be representing TUD- Tallaght Campus in Belfast.

The nine-strong squad also includes another two members of ITT’s Student Sport Ireland Badminton League title-winning team of last year in Jack Lawlor and Paddy Martin.

They have been drawn in a tough group that includes defending champions and hosts Queens University along with UCC and RCSI ‘B’.

“We have a tough task ahead of ourselves but we are really looking forward to getting started” said Frost.

“Our aim is to get out of our group and into the quarter finals and we’re quite optimistic we can do it. We’ll certainly give it our best” she added.
