Glenanne’s men will be led by player-coach Gary Shaw this season, taking over from Joe Brennan who did the role for the last three seasons.

The talented midfielder has played with the Tallaght club all of his career and it will be his first time to coach at this level.

Glenanne have appointed Gary Shaw as new player coach.

Glenanne finished in fourth place in the EY Hockey League last season having won it the previous season while they competed in the Euro Hockey in Switzerland in June.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” Gary told The Echo.

“It will be a transition year for the team with a number of players retiring and leaving at the end of last season.

“Our aim will be to make the top-four and play-offs and we will see what happens after that.

“We started pre-season last week and we are just dusting off the cobwebs from the summer break. We have a panel of 20 players and we are looking forward to the start of the new season,” he added.

Gary is a first cousin of former Ireland ladies hockey manager Graham Shaw. The team kick-off their EY Hockey League campaign against YMCA on September 21.

The squad have lost a number of players, including Sam O’Connor, who has moved to Belgium on a professional contract, keeper Ian Walker, Joe Brennan, Frederick Jakobow and Eddie O’Malley.

Meanwhile, Glenanne’s former player coach Joe Brennan has linked up with Corinthian in Whitechurch where he has co-opted Peter Carruth, an Olympian from 2016, to be his assistant coach and also to play.
