Horan captures National U20 prize

DAVID Horan recently captured the National Under 20 Pitch and Putt title in Glenville, finishing four shots clear of Castletown’s Evan Carry.

The Tallaght man shot eight under over 36 holes to finish on 100, carding four under over the first 18 that left him the clubhouse leader by two.

And he turned in another impressive four under on his second round to hold off a strong challenge from Carry, who had pulled back to within one shot of the lead with three holes remaining.

Indeed the young competitor demon-strated nerves of steel to produce two superb birdies on 16 and 18 to finish in style.

“I was relieved to win that title” Horan told The Echo. “I was four up with five to play, but then Evan came back and I was just one up with three to play. But I birdied two of the last three holes to win it” he said.

It capped a great weekend for the Glenville player who also turned in a great performance for the Dublin Inter County team on the Saturday in Royal Meath shooting nine under in his singles match to help the county win the Leinster Intermediate title.

In his doubles match with Old County’s Barry Gorey, they shot the lowest score of 45 for nine under while there were also fine performances by Lennon Blake, Gareth Walsh, Paddy Gaynor and Tom McMorrow who were strongly supported by sub Trevor Ward.

Meanwhile the Dublin Under 16 team, which comprised of all Glenville players bar one, finished second to Kerry in their All-Ireland competition.

Oisín Horan, Conaill Barnes, Luke Devlin, Jamie Palmer and Darren McGibney  from the Kiltipper club together with Lucan’s  Alex Keegan made up the team.
