Young Guerrine takes silver in London Open

COMHGHALL Guerrine from Tallaght won silver at the prestigious London Open Gymnastics Competition held in Redbridge Sports Centre.

Up against some of the top junior competitors in the World, the Phoenix Gymnastics Club star recorded some great performances that included a 9.7 on Parallel Bars for his silver medal.

He also scored 9.2 on Pommel, 9.55 on Vault and 9.25 on Highbar and was only 4.2 away from all-round Gold.

It was a remarkable achievement for the nine-year-old who was competing in his very first international.

Training more than 30 hours a week under Coach Wayne Healy in Phoenix, Guerrine is on the Olympic Start Squad which trains once a month in the National Training Centre.

Making the podium in London was a major boost to the young Tallaght gymnast whose long-term goal is to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“It was great to see Comhghall's hard work paying off, going out on an International stage against some of the best juniors in the World, showing what he's capable of and that he's up there with them,” said Coach Healy.

“For Comhghall, this silver medal is just the first stepping stone in his International career, but at such a young age he is already showing great promise.

“He put in a great performance on his six apparatus and kept calm under pressure. There’s definitely more to come from this young man,” he insisted.

Next up for Guerrine will be the National Champion-ships on October 13-14 in the National Indoor Arena.
