Gallagher, aged 22, with an address at Rossfield Close, Tallaght, had pleaded guilty to stealing €6,400 and £835 GBP from Boylesports, The Old Mill, Tallaght, on July 20, 2017.

Gallagher was before Judge Patricia McNamara for sentencing.

His counsel, Stephen Montgomery Bl, said his client had come up with €1,450 compensation.

Sergeant Eithne Madden said Boylesports had been in touch with the prosecuting garda to say they did not wish to deal with the restorative justice services but were happy to accept the €1,450 as compensation.

The court had heard that a regional manager with Boylesports had contacted the Old Mill branch as he was concerned about shortages in takings.

On July 20, 2017, a CCTV operation was put in place and it recorded Gallagher placing the cash in a bag.

Sgt. Madden said Gallagher had no previous convictions.

Mr Montgomery said his client had developed an addiction to cocaine but had now stopped taking cocaine.

He said Gallagher was now in a new job.

Reading the probation report, Judge McNamara noted that Gallagher was using cannabis.

She told Gallagher: “Don’t start using cannabis after stopping taking cocaine. Don’t go down that road, it won’t get you anywhere.”

She ordered that the €1,450 be paid to Boylesports.

She sentenced Gallagher to 200 hours community service in lieu of nine months imprisonment.
