Dominic’s Ladies crochet comfort blankets with love

By Aideen O'Flaherty

RESIDENTS shortly moving into a new nursing home in Tymon North have received a warm welcome from the Dominic’s Ladies’ Crochet Club, who crocheted over 40 blankets for them to welcome them to the community when they move from the soon-to-be-closed Crooksling nursing home in Brittas.

Building work on the new 100-bed Tymon North Community Nursing Home began in 2017, and it’s expected that just over half of their beds will be used to house older people from St Brigid’s Nursing Home Crooksling in Brittas, which is scheduled to close next year.

St Dominic’s Ladies’ Crochet Club

The Dominic’s Ladies’ Crochet Club received a grant from South Dublin County Council as part of Health and Wellbeing 2018, in order to help fund their initiative to support the new nursing home by crocheting blankets for the future residents.

Niamh Valentine from Dominic’s Community Centre, where the crochet club is based, said: “The initial idea was for each lady to crochet a variety of coloured squares which would then be turned into blankets.

“These would then be offered to every resident who transfers or moves into the new nursing home in Tallaght, so that they will have a comfort blanket crocheted with love from the local community.

“All of the ladies took to the challenge with so much enthusiasm that we were overwhelmed by the number of squares that were made and then eventually turned into blankets.

Over 40 blankets

“A representative from the Crooksling nursing home visited the crochet group last week to accept the blankets on their behalf.

“She was extremely grateful and very impressed with all the hard work that was done by the ladies.”

Over 40 handmade, crocheted blankets were handed over to ensure that the residents will feel at home when they move to their new home in Tallaght.
