Final curtain for Tallaght Theatre

By Mary Dennehy

THIS week signalled the final curtain for Tallaght Theatre’s original home, which is being knocked as part of a housing development to the back of the Cuckoo’s Nest site.

As part of the planning permission granted for the 45-unit residential development, permission was provided for the demolition of the existing Tallaght Theatre building – and the reconstruction of a new theatre in the north-west corner of the site.

As reported in The Echo in May, all houses within the Temple Woods housing development, are ‘sale agreed’ - with people expected to start moving into their new homes over the summer months.

On Wednesday morning, crews began demolition work on Tallaght Theatre, which is being reconstructed on the car park directly in front of the former theatre.

Established in 1975, Tallaght Theatre has over the years grown into an award-winning amateur dramatics group and venue – with the theatre winning 98FM’s Best of Dublin (Best Gig Venue) award in 2014.

As of yet, no confirmation have been provided on when the voluntary drama group, which has spent more than four decades bringing quality productions into a community setting, will officially move into its new theatre.

The demolition of Tallaght Theatre marks another change on the Tallaght landscape, after the Belgard Inn was demolished last week to allow for the development of a new Lidl store on the Belgard Road-site.

Following its closure in 2015, the Cuckoo’s Nest and its 4.5 acres of land went on the market in 2017 for a guide price of €4m.
