History and heritage to be celebrated at Tallafest

By Aideen O'Flaherty

THIS year’s Tallafest, which is an annual festival that celebrates all that Tallaght has to offer, will have history and heritage at the forefront of the event alongside a host of exciting and creative activities for the whole family to the enjoy.

The festival, which is now in its sixth year, is organised by Tallaght Community Council (TCC) and showcases a myriad of interesting elements of Tallaght, which this year includes a historical walk led by local historian Tomás Maher.

Tallaghts Great Paper Rope

People of Tallaght will have the opportunity to get involved in a new project called Tallaght's Great Paper Rope

Mr Maher will give participants an informative afternoon as he guides them around the medieval tower at St Maelruain’s, the bishop’s bathhouse and St Maelruain’s tree.

Some lesser known national monuments, such as the monastic dry rampart between Fanagans and Smyths, will also be a feature of the walk.

A talk will also be given by local historical author Eamon Maloney, and the people of Tallaght will have the opportunity to make their mark on the history of Tallaght by getting involved in a new project called Tallaght’s Great Paper Rope, which will celebrate the area’s paper-making history.

Tallafest will be held on Saturday, June 30, with the historical walk beginning at 1.30pm in Tallaght Village, and Eamon Maloney’s talk beginning at 2pm in St Maelruain’s.

There will also be a kids’ zone, a creative zone, an active seniors’ hub and live performances at the free event.
