Jacob’s social club gets a ‘substantial’ Amazon sum

JACOB’S Irish Biscuits Social Club has handed over their building on Belgard Road to Amazon after negotiating a “substantial” sum of money for the building.

It has been decided that the money will be divided between two charities, after the club members voted on the distribution of the funds.

The club announced that they had negotiated with Amazon for a sum of money at the club’s final annual general meeting last week.

It is estimated that there are between 1,000 and 1,200 members of the club, which was set up for Jacob’s Biscuit Factory workers in 1980.

Maria Breen, the secretary of the social club, told The Echo: “We’re handing the club over to Amazon.

“We’ve negotiated a substantial amount of money that the members are donating to charity.

“The members have voted, and the cheques are being written from the members of the Jacob’s Biscuits Social Club.”

Ms Breen also described Amazon as being “very generous”, and added that she wanted to make it clear that the members will not be getting a lump sum, and the money will be going straight to the charities.

The social club was well-known in the Tallaght for being a popular social spot over the years.

Amazon purchased the site of the former Jacobs Biscuits Factory in 2015 where they are currently building a data centre.

The tech giant also acquired the Shinko Microelectronics site in 2014, which is located in Greenhills Industrial Estate in Tallaght.

The former Shinko site is adjacent to a former Tesco distribution centre, which is also being used as a data centre for Amazon, and this brings the total number of Amazon data centres in Tallaght to three.

Amazon was given planning permission to build a data centre on the site of the former Jacob’s Biscuits Factory last year.
