Lifetime of Giving Award for Bridie, Rose and Aidan

By Mary Dennehy

THE steps taken by Tallaght and its residents over the past six decades were recognised at this year’s Tallaght Person of the Year Awards.

The foundations of what Tallaght has become, and all that is celebrated annually at Tallaght Person of the Year, were laid by residents born and bred in Tallaght, together with those who moved into the area’s new estates.

The DIY approach of Tallaght’s residents in the sixties, seventies and eighties paved a better path for everyone.

Alongside lobbying and campaigning for better infrastructure, those living in Tallaght’s ‘new’ estates created a sense of pride, volunteerism, activism and resilience – and that has been passed down through the generations.

Many people have over the years helped to build Tallaght into a home.

However, three stalwarts who have tirelessly promoted their community, and volunteered, supported and campaigned for social justice, were applauded last Saturday.

Those gathered in the Red Cow were on their feet as Bridie Sweeney, Rose O’Keeffe and Aidan Thomas were awarded for a ‘lifetime of giving’ to their hometown of Tallaght.

Liz Kennedy, Chair of Tallaght Community Council (TCC), told The Echo: “Bridie, Rose and Aidan have given decades of their lives to Tallaght, and are continuing to do it.

“It was an honour for TCC to bestow the Lifetime of Giving award to Bridie, Rose and Aidan on behalf of the community.”
