Sergeant Michael Ahern told Judge Patricia McNamara that on March 11 last the Gardai carried out a search of a house where Singleton was living.

He said the Gardai found €200 worth of cannabis in Singleton's bedroom.

In response to Judge McNamara, Sergeant Ahern said that Singleton had not been the target of the search.

He said that Singleton had no previous for drugs offences.

Singleton's counsel, Stephen Montgomery BL, said that at the time of the offence his client had just finished in a relationship.

He asked the judge to leave Singleton without a conviction.

Judge McNamara told Mr Montgomery: "If he can spend €200 on drugs then he can spend €250 on a donation to charity.

If you have a conviction for a drugs offence you will have great difficulty getting a visa to travel".

Given a choice of charities, Singleton chose to make a donation of €250 to Childline. Judge McNamara remanded Singleton on continuing bail for four weeks for payment of the donation.

If the donation is paid, Singleton will receive the Probation Act.
