Parents warned to be vigilant after ChewHits seizure

By Mary Dennehy

PARENTS have been advised to be vigilant after ‘cannabis-infused sweets’ were seized in the Tallaght area.

The product, a version of which is called ChewHits, are now on the radar of drugs projects, which believe an education and awareness campaign around cannabis is needed locally.

According to Grace Hill, co-ordinator of the Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Task Force (TDATF), they were made aware by gardai that cannabis infused sweets have recently been seized locally and that parents should be vigilant.

“There is not an epidemic but parents need to be vigilant”, Ms Hill said.

“There are so many different types of cannabis from all different levels of potency and young people and parents need to get educated.

“[Cannabis] comes in so many different forms... and [these cannabis infused sweets] target a younger audience.”

The drugs task force and its drug prevention programme, which is run by Foroige, are working on an education and awareness campaign around cannabis, in partnership with young people.

The campaign will involve the creation of an interactive awareness programme for young people and tailored information for parents.

The Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Task Force is also hosting an information/awareness and networking event on May 15 from 10am to 1pm in Tallaght Library.

The event, which is being held in partnership with Tusla, will mark United Nations Day of the Family, and provide an opportunity to families, including those impacted by addiction, to learn about support services available to them locally.

These services include education, prevention and family support services for parents and children/young people.
