Residents appalled by litter black spot at bottle bank

By Laura Lyne

RESIDENTS in Tallaght who frequent Sean Walsh Park have raised concerns about the “minimal and lacklustre” collection of bottles from Rehab bottle bank facility, located within the recycling centre of the park, reports Laura Lyne.

The concerns were raised by Tallaght Community Council PRO Tara De Buitléar in a correspondence circulated to local politicians, community groups, South Dublin County Council and Rehab recycling.

She said: “Volunteers in Tallaght have spent the last three weekends cleaning up this area.

“All efforts are now negated by a very minimal and lacklustre “collection” of the bottle bank – following a bank holiday – a well-known and predictable high-volume time for glass recycling.

“We (TCC) recently passed a motion at our AGM to relocate these bins due to the consistently poor management and persistent littering on this valuable amenity for tourists and locals alike.

“This litter black spot is creating a very poor impression of our park, the national Dublin Mountain Way and Tallaght.

“The frequency of the overflow and delayed collections are also “normalising” litter to the school children who pass this site daily.

“Nothing we have seen in the last week challenges the need to move these recycling bins to a location where they will be pro-actively managed on a daily basis.”

The Echo understands that plans to increase the number of “bring centres” around the county are also taking place by South Dublin County Council, with the number due to increase from 70 to 120.
