A SOCCER fan was found in possession of  €50 worth of cocaine and €40 of cannabis on his way to watch a World Cup match last June, Tallaght Court has heard.

Judge Patricia McNamara accepted jurisdiction in Stephen Bingham’s case.

Tallaght Court House 2

Bingham, aged 24, with an address at Hillview Grove, Ballinteer, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and possession of cocaine at Mountainview Park on June 22, 2018.

Sergeant Michael Ahern told the court that at 5.20pm on the above date, a garda stopped Bingham and searched him under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found the drugs.

Sgt Ahern said Bingham had no previous for drugs but three for road traffic offences.

Bingham’s solicitor, Michael Hennessy, said his client had been on his way to watch a World Cup soccer match when he was stopped. He said Bingham did not have a clear memory of the event.

He asked the judge if she would consider including Bingham in the Restorative Justice programme.

Judge McNamara noted that Bingham had been caught with two types of drugs and she did not think he was suitable for the programme.

She then told Bingham “to do some research on the effect of illegal drugs” and to write something on the subject.

The case was adjourned to March for him to complete the programme and for payment of €250 to charity.
