Tree trail completed with six apple trees

A NEW tree trail in Sean Walsh Park has taken root, with 15 native species of trees now dotted along the route for the local community to enjoy – and learn about.

To celebrate National Tree Week earlier this month, the last of the trees on the trail were planted – six apple trees.

These trees complete the trail, which includes willow, birch, hazel, alder, holly, mountain ash, hawthorn, bird cherry, elder, apple, aspen, ash, yew, Scots pine and oak.

A LoveTallaghtOutdoors project, the tree trail was created in conjunction with Tallaght Community Council and South Dublin County Council – with Old Bawn Community School students helping to plant the final apple trees.

A tree trail map for Sean Walsh Park is available online, with tree trail sheets also available for schools or families to print out and bring on their Tallaght tree adventure.

Speaking with The Echo, Gar Tyrrell, Tallaght Person of the Year and a Climate Ambassador with An Taisce, said that the tree trail is there to be enjoyed by everybody in the community – including schools.

“The tree trail is a fun thing to do and will help kids and adults connect with nature and their local park”, Gar said.

“The more we connect, love and enjoy nature, the more willing we are to protect nature going forward.”

He added: “This tree trail is really important, planting trees is really important, especially because of the eco-system service trees give.

“Alongside providing oxygen and absorbing Co2, trees are great for helping climate change.

“They are also brilliant for bio-diversity, and provides great habitats for wildlife.

“There’s a million reasons why we should be planting trees.”
