Work on new library deemed to be ‘best Christmas present’

By Aideen O' Flaherty

THE news that work will begin on the construction of Castletymon Library in Tallaght next month is the “best Christmas present” the area has had in years, according to a local councillor.

For the development of the new library, €2.8 million has been ringfenced in South Dublin County Council’s 2019-2021 Capital Programme.

The library closed in December 2017 after South Dublin County Council’s lease on the premises ended, with the local authority choosing not to seek a lease renewal as they claimed the building was “unsuitable for occupation”.

Since then, a number of the groups who used to use the library are now being facilitated in St Aengus’s Community Centre and a mobile library has been serving the area, and will continue to do so until the new library building is open.

The Echo understands that the contractor plans to begin work on the new library development in the first week of January, with plans for the building work to be complete by the end of 2019.

Independent councillor Mick Duff told The Echo: “We’re very, very pleased. The reaction locally has been ecstatic.

“The mobile library will continue to serve the area while the building work is going on, but being able to drop into your own library at any time is something that people in the area miss.

“It’s probably the best Christmas present the area has had in years.”
