Over 30 happy walkers strode out on inaugural walk by club

OVER 30 people took part in the inaugural walk with the Ballyfermot Hiking Club at the weekend – enjoying a brisk 9km trek in Glendalough.

The group was established by Cloverhill Road resident Dean Rogers (23), who felt there was a demand for a hiking group in the community.

A great turnout by the new members of the Ballyfermot Hiking Club

A fan of outdoor activities, Dean put forward a proposal on social media over the New Year, and the positive response from residents led to the creation of Ballyfermot Hiking Club.

On Saturday, the group met up for their maiden walk, which explored the Glendalough loop.

Dean said: “It was a great turnout, really happy with how it went. Everyone had happy heads and smiles all around.

“The worst challenge was the rain and the wind, but if you challenge yourself in tough outdoor environments everyday, life becomes a lot easier.”

It is early days for the Ballyfermot Hiking Club, but Dean hopes to build it up steadily.

Speaking last week to The Echo, he floated the possibility of membership with Mountaineering Ireland.

“If we get a core group, membership to Mountaineering Ireland is €35 per person per year, and that means you are fully insured under them. New clubs are entitled to grants and members can get 10 to 15 per cent discounts at hiking shops,” he said.

Anyone who wants to join in, can check the Ballyfermot Hiking Club Facebook page for details.
