Remembering those who lost their lives

By Maurice Garvey

PEOPLE from Ballyfermot and surrounding areas who are serving or formerly served in the Defence Forces and emergency services, were commemorated by the opening of a Tribute Garden on Saturday.

The initiative was organised by a small group of people from both military and emergency service backgrounds from Ballyfermot.

Unveiling of the plaque

There was a big turnout at the Civic Centre on Saturday with members from a range of organisations in attendance to witness the unveiling of a plaque.

Pam Reilly, Chairperson of the Ballyfermot Tribute Garden said local members have served or are serving in the Defence Forces (Army, Naval Service, Air Corps), Garda Siochana, Irish Coast Guard, Ambulance Service, Dublin Fire Brigade, Civil Defence and RNLI.

“Some of these people have lost their lives carrying out their duty at home and abroad, so it was felt by all there would be no better way to honour these people than to create this Tribute Garden and unveil a monument to be placed beside the Civic Centre.”

Speaking to The Echo last month, Melissa Egan, the secretary of the Ballyfermot Tribute Garden, said: “Those from Ballyfermot who have paid the ultimate price while carrying out their duty, have to date been six, if not more. Some remain missing to this day.”
