Anti-social behaviour ‘is borne out of boredom and frustration’ from youths

RECENT anti-social behaviour in Palmerstown and across parts of North Clondalkin, is borne out of “boredom and frustration”, according to local councillors, reports Maurice Garvey.

Dublin Fire Brigade responded this week to a small fire deliberately set on the green at Oakfield Avenue and Park in Palmerstown – an ongoing issue involving young lads aged 12-14.

Cllr Alan Hayes (Ind), says the youths live nearby and residents know who they are.

“A lot of it is borne out of boredom and frustration. The youths think they are invisible even if they are only 30/40 metres from people’s houses. They might think they are doing no harm but it is the fear of what happens next,” said Cllr Hayes.

Chris O’Dwyer, Labour Party area rep for Clondalkin-Rathcoole said there has been “a noticeable increase of anti-social behaviour”.

“Not an evening went by over the weekend that I did not get a phone call from concerned residents who feel intimated in their own homes,” said O’Dwyer. “Residents in Palmerstown Woods reported a group of young males going in and out of gardens stealing wheelie bins and setting them alight in Collinstown Park. Residents living close to Collinstown Park also reported large stones being thrown at windows, cars and passers-by. Other incidents occurred in Bawnogue, Deansrath, Woodford and along the canal.

“Local gardai need to be resourced to deal with this increasing issue before there is a serious incident. There needs to be increased focus on diversionary programmes and a roll out of other educational resources.”
