A LOCAL girl is starring in a new ad for LIDL Ireland which highlights the struggle for equality in Ladies’ Gaelic football, reports Aimee Walsh.

Orlagh Ní Dhubhain, who attends Gaelscoil na Camóige in Clondlakin Village, is a member of Round Tower GAA Club and was chosen to be in LIDL Ireland’s new advertisement that came out Monday, February 8.

Round Tower member Orlagh Ni Dhubhain starts in TV campaign

Speaking about how the opportunity came out, Orlagh’s mam Angela told The Echo: “One of the coaches in Round Tower was in touch with the LGFA and they needed an under 12’s player to be in the ad, so she rang my husband who was the main coach for the U12’s and she said I need two girls are you training tonight? I said we were and she came down to have a look and she picked two of them out and Orlagh was picked.”

Shot on a hill in Glendalough, the campaign is a visual representation of the uphill battle that ladies Gaelic footballers and women in sport face in striving for equality.

“Orlagh is GAA mad as a player and spectator. From watching Ladies’ football, she would have known who they all were and they would be her heroes. She was absolutely delighted when she saw them. They were brilliant to her, so encouraging. She had a ball, she really did.

“A lot of people have asked if the hill in the ad was photoshopped and I said no its real, believe me!

“They literally spent the guts of two days in the freezing cold at the side of that hill in Glendalough.”

The ad was filmed in March 2020, two days before the first lockdown came into place.

“The ad was supposed to come out last year in time with the Football Championships, but it was on hold because of covid.

“We didn’t really know how much of the ad she would be in, or if it would even show her face but Orlagh was absolutely delighted with it.”
