Litter-generator areas a target for council’s patrols and investigations

By Maurice Garvey

SOUTH Dublin County Council say there has been an “increased targeted focus” on known litter-generator areas in the county.

Along with a raised visibility of warden service patrol vehicles, SDCC say a number of structured routes have been “identified for continuous patrol, as well as ad hoc patrols and investigations as required.”

A resident in Clondalkin says a greenfield site off the Coldcut Road, close to Harelawn Estate, has become a dumping hotspot in recent months.

“It is being used as a regular dumping ground, sometimes you can see plumes of smoke coming from behind these houses,” he said.

The resident also said blocks from a nearby wall are scattered across the footpath and have not been cleared.

Earlier this year, SDCC investigated bags of domestic rubbish dumped at the site, to establish if there is any incriminating evidence left behind by those responsible.

A SDCC spokesperson said: “Our public realm crew is currently attending as required to the report on blocks from the wall which are scattered across the footpath.

“As always, the council is grateful for assistance and support from local residents or others in their investigations of such incidents as they arise.

"In the absence of substantive evidence/witness statements and the presence of such witnesses in court it is not possible for us to bring successful prosecutions.”
