Criminality is top of the list in the public’s election concerns

By Hayden Moore

WHILE out recording data with the public ahead of the General Election, issues such as healthcare, housing, the pension gap and transport consistently popped up but one issue in particular prevailed – crime.

This week, The Echo visited the three constituencies in South Dublin to ask what issues residents were most concerned about coming into the election – in Dublin Mid-West, crime was top of the list.

In Lucan, several residents detailed how anti-social behaviour is rife in the area.

An area that continued to be brought up was Ballyowen Castle Shopping Centre.

“Crime in this area is going up, huge. Every night nearly,” said Lucan resident, Lee.

“Sure, there was only a big fight a couple of weeks ago that spilled in from the carpark.

“You can see the kids going around, they have nothing to do. It’s very rare that you would see a Garda car.”

Another resident, Barbara, highlighted a similar problem at the same location in Ballyowen Shopping Centre.

“The local shops down here, absolutely horrendous,” she said.

“The smell of weed, drugs going in and out of the shop – absolute disgrace.”

Two residents also revealed that they had their cars burgled, with Debbie telling The Echo: “Big-time robberies around here, we were lucky,” explained Debbie.

“We got broken into about five or six years ago, they took our Laguna.

“What do you want with a Laguna, we don’t know.”

An Gardaí Siochána were contacted for comment but, didn’t respond in time for print.
