Lufthansa to create 150 new jobs in Celbridge

By Maurice Gavrey

SOME of the 400 workers who lost their jobs at Lufthansa Technik when it closed its Rathcoole plant in 2014, may be lured back by the company, as they seek to create up to 150 new jobs in Celbridge.

It is understood that the aircraft maintenance specialist intends opening a new operation in Celbridge, Co Kildare, where it will focus on ‘minor’ aircraft engine repair, that could employ up to 150 people.

The international company, part of German airline and aviation giant Lufthansa, employs more than 750 people in Shannon, where it overhauls aircraft and maintains engine parts.

Industry sources say Lufthansa hopes to open the new plant early in 2020 and could announce plans in the first quarter of the year.

Spokesman Wolfgang Reinert said their existing commitments showed that the Republic of Ireland was an important location for the company.

He said they regularly review their operations and added that should Lufthansa Technik have concrete plans for a new plant in Celbridge, it would announce them.

Established in 1980, Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland has built up a worldwide clientele.

The former Lufthansa Technik Airmotive facility on the Naas Road, Rathcoole looked after maintenance, repair and overhaul of CFM International and Pratt & Whitney engines and accessories.

It was equipped with state-of-the-art processes that provide in-house repair capability for parts and components.
