New owners to continue business at Superdome in Palmerstown

By Brendan Grehan

AFTER 25 years in operation, the Palmerstown Superdome closed on Sunday, January 13, reports Brendan Grehan.

The owners of the Palmerstown Superdome told The Echo that they had “no comment” in relation to the matter.

There has been speculation on social media that this means the end for ten-pin bowling in the Palmerstown community. The Echo can exclusively reveal the good news that the Palmerstown Superdome will continue to operate as a bowling alley when it reopens in the near future.

Councillor Guss O’Connell told The Echo: “The Superdome will continue as a bowling alley, but the pool hall side will be changed to a gym, they won’t lose the bowling alley.”

Cllr O’Connell also said that the company who are applying for the planning permission is “Planet Bowl Company”. Despite a number of efforts The Echo was unable to contact a representative of the Planet Bowl Company.

Cllr O’Connell has had a long relationship with the Superdome. He told The Echo that in the past he had attempted to get a drinks licence for the premises so that a bar could be opened.

Cllr O’Connell said: “Due to legislation I was unable to get a licence for the Superdome. The idea being that a bowler could enjoy a drink after a game. There would not be drinking on the lanes but adjoining them. It was not to be.”

The connection between the councillor and the Superdome does not end there.

Cllr O’Connell’s daughter, Mary Catherine, was a talented ten-pin bowler. She trained and played at the Palmerstown Superdome.

Cllr O’Connell said: “Mary Catherine went on to represent Ireland internationally at ten-pin bowling. The Superdome was very good for recognising and promoting talent. The really good news is that there will be ten-pin bowling at the facility when it reopens.”
