STAFF at Pfizer’s Grange Castle site are involved in the quality testing of the Covid-19 vaccine, which is being developed by Pfizer and German partner BioNTech, reports Maurice Garvey.

The two companies said their experimental vaccine is 90 per cent effective in preventing Covid-19 based on initial data from a large study.

According to a Pfizer spokesperson: “The Grange Castle site is working on quality testing batches of the vaccine candidate that are being manufactured at the group’s plant in Puurs, Belgium.”

Pfizer employ approximately 1,700 in the South Dublin County plant, which also conducts research and development through the global biotherapeutics group at Grange Castle.

The Echo understands the work has been ongoing at Grange Castle with regard to the vaccine, providing an essential support role in the process. Pfizer and BioNTech are the first drugmakers to show successful data from a large-scale clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine.

The companies said they have so far found no serious safety concerns and expect to seek US emergency use authorisation later this month.

The European Commission is to approve a contract for the supply of the vaccine.

In a statement, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said they will authorise a contract for up to 300 million doses.

Once this vaccine becomes available, our plan is to deploy it quickly, everywhere in Europe.

“This will be the fourth contract with a pharmaceutical company to buy vaccines.

And more will come. Because we need to have a broad portfolio of vaccines based on different technologies,” she said.
