Murphy, aged 39, with an address at Droim Na Coille, Lucan, pleaded guilty to damaging four Walker 26-inch led tvs at Boylesports Betting Office, Main Street, Lucan, on November 2, 2019.

Garda Brian Hally told the court that Murphy had been in Boylesports in Lucan.

Garda Hally said: “He lost a bet and picked up a chair and smashed four TVs. He then left the shop.”

Garda Hally said he found Murphy in Carroll’s pub in Lucan sitting at the bar.

He said Murphy had no previous convictions.

Murphy’s solicitor, Simon Fleming, said his client’s mother had been gravely ill at the time of the offence and he had been visiting her.

Judge McHugh told Mr Fleming; “I fail to see the connection between having a parent who is gravely ill and then he does the necessary to four Walkers led TVs”.

Mr Fleming said Murphy had been drinking after visiting his mother and was then arrested in “a pub across the road”.

Presenting Sergeant Maria Callaghan asked the judge to note that Murphy had paid €720 compensation to Boylesports.

Noting that Murphy had no previous convictions, Judge McHugh sentenced him to 150 hours community service with three months jail in default.
