Residents ‘somewhat concerned’ about safety

By Brendan Grehan

A SURVEY of Lucan residents has found that 50 per cent were “sometimes concerned” or “somewhat concerned” about their personal safety.

The survey of 455 residents was carried out by Lucan councillor Paul Gogarty. The survey is due to be launched next Tuesday in the Spa Hotel.

In a preview of the findings of the survey, Cllr Gogarty said a majority of residents surveyed are either strongly concerned or somewhat concerned for their safety in public.

Just under 6 per cent of residents said they were “not at all safe” and feared for their personal safety, a further 50 per cent were either “sometimes concerned” or “somewhat concerned” about personal safety, crime and antisocial behaviour.

Only a quarter of people surveyed said they felt reasonably safe. People living in “Old Lucan” felt safest while those living in Lucan east of Ballyowen/Grange Castle Road (R136) had the highest concerns about public safety and anti-social behaviour.

Cllr Gogarty told The Echo: “These findings show that the public are strongly concerned about anti-social behaviour, crime and personal safety.

The Survey

Words like ‘anti-social’ and ‘Garda’ also featured strongly in the comments section. It shows that resourcing for our Gardai, especially Community Gardai is a huge issue in Lucan and the various agencies need to respond to this by putting meaningful strategies in place.”

The survey was carried out between May and September of this year on a range of issues through an online web link and handwritten survey sheets. These included issues like the need for a community council, and litter.

The full report will be launched on Tuesday and will be made available online to the wider public after that date. It is also intended to bring it to the attention of South Dublin County Council.
