€50 fake notes warning to public and businesses

By Hayden Moore

FRAUDULENT notes have been making their way into a local shop, with its owner concerned about their circulation in the area.

The Echo understands that staff have seen an increase in the number of fake notes, having taken in three €50 notes in the space of just a few days.

In a statement to The Echo, An Garda Síochána stated that although there “has not been an increase in the detection of fraudulent currency” in general circulation, they advised business owners to be vigilant.

“There has not been an increase in the detection of fraudulent currency in circulation,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“However An Garda Síochána would advise businesses and members of the public who deal in cash to be aware that such notes are in circulation and to take appropriate precautionary measures.

“Business owners should ensure staff members handling cash are alerted to watch out for these fraudulent notes.

“These notes should not be accepted as legal tender and any incidents of persons trying to pay with this should be reported to Gardai immediately.”

The use of fraudulent currency when trying to purchase goods or services is an offence under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001 and carries a potential prison sentence of 10 years.

Since discovering that the notes were fraudulent, staff at the Tallaght store have managed to curtail any further incidents.
