By Aideen O'Flaherty

FIVE new gardaí will be assigned to Rathcoole Garda Station by the end of the year, and there has also been confirmation from gardaí that a fully manned patrol car will be available in the Rathcoole subdistrict 24 hours a day by the same time period.

This follows on from the assigning of two new gardaí in the district in mid-July, after repeated calls from residents for more garda resources in the area.

Rathcoole Garda station – plans for an increase in resources at the station in the New Year

Francis Timmons, an Independent councillor for the Clondalkin Local Electoral Area, which includes Rathcoole, told The Echo: “I am delighted that there have been some developments in regards Rathcoole station.

“I have organised a meeting with some local residents in Newcastle and Garda Liam Sex to look at anti-social issues, and will organise a public meeting after this.

“The need for a 24-hours-a-day subdistrict has been highlighted by me a lot over the lifetime of the last council, and it is something I have been campaigning for.

“The areas of Rathcoole, Newcastle, Brittas and Saggart are growing rapidly, and thousands of new homes bring increased challenges.

“We need to work with together to combat the many challenges we face as a community.”

According to a post online by the Saggart Rathcoole Rural District group, there are plans for an increase in resources at the station in the New Year, “but an exact timeline could not be committed to as of yet, as they are waiting on new gardaí to arrive to the division, which will depend on government funding.”

Gardaí are encouraging people in the locality to report any crimes or suspicious activity by calling 999 for emergencies, or Rathcoole Garda Station on 01 66 67900, or Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600.
