€12.5 million refurbishment planned for Labre Park Traveller accommodation

By Maurice Garvey

A REPORT delivered to Dublin City Council’s Housing SPC on Traveller Accommodation sites across the city, includes a major €12.5 million refurbishment fund for Labre Park.

Whilst plans for the Ballyfermot site have yet to be finalised, Ballyfermot Traveller Action Project (BTAP) have “absolute confidence” that it will be delivered, after experiencing a number of failed promises under previous Traveller Accommodation programmes in the last 18 years.

Clúid Housing Association are the management agent for the redevelopment, which includes the construction of new accommodation units, and refurbishment of existing units.

Labre Park residents are hopeful the plan will address existing problems, such as overcrowding, permanent accommodation for 25 families who are living in temporary accommodation and access to water, sanitation and electricity for a number of families.

The report at today’s Housing SPC states Clúid have appointed a design team, and a pre part 8 presentation will be delivered to the area committee in the coming weeks, with residents to agree any changes.

It states a proposed budget of €12.5 million has been allocated for the project.

Lorraine McMahon, from BTAP, said the Labre Park plan, which is currently at stage 2 and 3, has involved a lot of consultation with residents.

Ms McMahon said: “There has been ongoing consultation between residents and Clúid. When the build starts it will be a two-year project.

“We will be meeting the Traveller Accommodation Unit on February 16, and with Clúid next week. There are different stages of development plans but it is moving forward. Clúid Housing are very much onboard. We have absolute confidence that it will happen this time.”

The Echo contacted Clúid for comment.
