Residents warned after children caught collecting for charity event that does not exist

Local people are being warned to be extra vigilant when handing over donations to people calling to their homes who say they are collecting for charity.

The warning came after children calling to doors in the Palmerstown area were found to be collecting for an event that did not exist.

Alan Hayes is a member of his local Neighbourhood Watch in Palmerstown and he also runs the Facebook page, Palmerstown Neighbourhood Watch.

He said: “The kids are being sent around again by their abusive parents who sit in cars and watch them do it.

“Collecting money for a charity walk that isn't happening, claiming to do it for Palmerstown Community & Youth Centre.”

He went on to say some people were handing over donations unaware that the event is not actually taking place at all.

Mr Hayes finished by saying: “If you see them, don't donate and call Gardai immediately. They want to catch them as much as we do. Ballyfermot 01-6667200 or Ronanstown 01-6667700.”

When the post went live on the Facebook page there was an immediate reaction from people in the Palmerstown, Lucan and Ballyfermot areas, saying they had people calling to their doors collecting for similar events.

Anyone uncertain about charity callers at their door should refrain from donating, and should call their local Garda station if they feel the caller is not legitimate.
