Smart water stations that allow bottle refills installed in parks

By Maurice Garvey

NEW smart water stations that allow for bottle refills have been installed recently across the county with more planned once Covid-19 restrictions are eased.

South Dublin County Council told The Echo they currently have 11 water fountains in place and plan to install a further three units when restrictions are lifted.

Although some people may be reluctant to use public water fountains during Covid-19, Cllr Alan Hayes (Ind), believes it is right that local authorities encourage the use of public parks and provide an outlet for drinking water.

“It is a matter of personal choice. These water stations are designed to fill a container bottle, they are designed so that the water flows from the top straight down with force,” said Cllr Hayes.

“We need to learn to live with Covid. People can choose to push the button on the unit with a glove or a sanitary wipe. I don’t think this should be discouraged. We need to encourage the use of parks and these water fountains are great additions to local parks like the units they have already in places like Waterstown and Griffeen.”

Smart water fountains are located at Tallaght Civic Theatre/Rua Red, Lucan Village, Griffeen Valley Park, Tymon Park (two locations), Clondalkin Village, Rathfarnham Castle Park, Waterstown Park, Corkagh Park (two locations) and Rathcoole Village.

According to the council, since their installation, a total volume of over 44,550 litres has been dispensed, saving almost 91,000 half litre plastic bottles. Details of the individual water stations in the county and overall usage can be found online at Water Stations.
