Government extends Level 5 restrictions until March 5

By Aideen O'Flaherty

THE Cabinet has approved the extension of Level 5 restrictions until March 5, while a number of new measures to deal with the spread of the coronavirus are to be implemented.

These measures include a mandatory 14-day quarantine for people traveling to Ireland from abroad without a negative Covid-19 test, while all arrivals from Brazil and South Africa will have to quarantine.

However, legislation will be needed to enforce the mandatory quarantine period for Irish and EU citizens arriving in the country, and it is understood that this legislation will be drafted quickly.

The new regulations will also require all people entering the country to self-isolate for a period.

Fines for people who travel outside the 5km limit and who intend to travel abroad are also expected to rise from the current fine of €100, however the Cabinet has not yet reached a decision on how high the increase will be.

The new restrictions come amidst the high number of coronavirus cases in the State.

As of yesterday evening (January 25), there were 1,372 new coronavirus cases. 1,931 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised, of which 218 were in ICU.
